The Buyer

Brett Fleming: Armit Wines' managing director

Since its inception in 1988, Armit Wines has never been afraid to break the mould. The founder, John Armit, played a key role in transforming how the wine industry operates, pioneering the practice of buying directly from producers and building long standing relationships. John stepped back from the business in 2008 and sold a majority share to Dutch group Baarsma, which was bought in its entirety by Invivo Wine in 2017.

In July 2019, Invivo bought the last remaining shares and became the complete owner of Armit Wines. This new arrangement has allowed Armit to return to operating entirely independently and autonomously in the UK with the added financial backing and support of the French group.

The agency business operates a fine wine private account management team, alongside a trading arm with significant reach in the Off and On trade, supplying top restaurants and retailers across the UK. This unique, multi-channel approach offers the producers an unparalleled reach across all sectors of the UK wine trade.

The Armit Wines Portfolio

Italy has always been the strength and core of the Armit Wines portfolio, since we were established 1988. Tuscany and Piedmont are pillars of our identity in Italy, with relationships such as those with Tenuta San Guido and Bruno Giacosa established over 3 decades ago. Our Portfolio has strengthened and evolved over the years, to include up and coming classic regions (such as Etna and Alto Adige), in addition to having helped elevate Estates to iconic status (For example Il Marroneto, Tiberio and Roagna).

Over the past year Armit have added Luca Spinola Gavi di Gavi, Bernhard Ott (Austria) and Vini Noüe-Marinič (Slovenia) to our international portfolio. Both these additions mark significant additions to Armit’s collection of leading, terroir-driven producers and further reinforces our commitment to representing the very best in European fine wine. We are constantly looking to support the ever-changing needs of our customers with exceptional wines that fit their needs and the demands of the market.

Armit Wines CSR & Sustainability

As a business Armit Wines is committed to fostering a sustainable and inclusive future for the drinks industry. As part of its broader Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) efforts, Armit actively supports initiatives like Queena Wong’s Curious Vines and Drinks United, with representation on both councils to help drive industry-wide progress in Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I).

Sustainability is a core focus across our portfolio, actively seeking out producers with strong sustainability credentials and focusing on ethical and environmentally conscious practices. Producers like Chateau Maris, a B Corp certified winery that boasts a carbon-negative winery made from hemp bricks and Marlborough’s Astrolabe, certified net carbon zero through Toitū.

In house, we recognise the importance of reducing waste, including packaging and are in the process of creating a forward-thinking Corporate Social Responsibility Charter. This will incorporate, not just Environmental Sustainability, but a company code of ethics, Social Responsibility, Staff welfare and EDI – all fundamental to the Sustainability of our industry and our business. All initiatives are driven by the strong sustainability credentials of our parent company Invivo.
