What’s in a name? Henriot brings back Cuvée des Enchanteleurs

Heritage in wine is always a valued commodity and in Champagne perhaps this is even more so. With this in mind, Champagne Henriot has unveiled the return of the prestige Cuvée des Enchanteleurs, reconnecting with this founding name and paying tribute to the Maison’s iconic heritage. Miranda Long joined the preview launch event in Claridges Hotel before the official launch in France at Wine Paris.

Champagne Henriot was founded in 1808 by Apolline Henriot and the unveiling of the return of the emblematic Cuvée des Enchanteleurs marks a new chapter in the House’s history. The prestige cuvée has been known as Hemera since 2005 and is crafted from the wines of the six founding Grand Crus in equal proportions. The return of the Cuvée des Enchanteleurs name (or Enchanters’ cuvée in English) with the new 2015 vintage embodies the pursuit of balance, depth and long ageing that characterises the House.

Expression of continuity

Cuvée des Enchanteleurs

“The return of Cuvée des Enchanteleurs is not a look backward," Guillaume Deglise, managing director Champagne Henriot

This new expression is carried by freshness, structure and depth, a signature of the House’s historic terroirs of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Guillaume Deglise, managing director, commented at the relaunch:

“The return of Cuvée des Enchanteleurs is not a look backward, but the expression of an assumed continuity: that of a House that evolves without ever denying itself. By restoring this cuvée to its original name, we affirm our determination to remain faithful to the identity of Champagne Henriot, while fully anchoring it in its time.”

The tasting line-up in full

At this exclusive event in the elegant Claridges Hotel in London we first enjoyed the Champagne Henriot Blanc Souverain and then were treated to a vertical tasting. Joining the new 2015 prestige vintage we savoured the Henriot Cuvée des Enchanteleurs vintages 2013 (the exception named Cuvée Hemera), 2000 and even one from 1998 which had held its finesse and balance remarkably. The tasting powerfully symbolises the link between the newly launched Cuvée des Enchanteleurs 2015 and the past Cuvée vintages which have been reposing in the cellars.Slipped in at the end was an extraordinary vintage from 1989.

100% Grand Cru

The 2015 vintage is 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, disgorged in July 2024, with a dosage of 3.5g/l. The Cuvée des Enchanteleurshas always had at least 10 years ageing with 100% Grand Crus wines from Verzy, Verzenay, Mailly-Champagne in Montagne de Reims and Avize, Chouilly, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in Côte des Blancs.

Cuvée des Enchanteleurs

"We wanted once more to pay tribute to the Maison’s heritage and philosophy," Alice Tétienne, cellar master

Looking back on the return to the legacy of name, Alice Tétienne, cellar master and deputy managing director at Champagne Henriot, explained that the Cuvée des Enchanteleurs became known as Hemera from 2005, reflecting a change in climate and a renewed focus on harvest precision. “However, we found there is a strong affection and connection with the Cuvée des Enchanteleurs founding name so we wanted once more to pay tribute to the Maison’s heritage and philosophy whilst taking on a more sustainable and contemporary future”.

Maison rebrand

This restoration is accompanied by new packaging in line with the recent rebrand of the entire Henriot collection. More restrained and authentic, the packaging has been designed as a vessel devoted entirely to the wine. Materials used in production of the Cuvée des Enchanteleurs 2015 have been reduced and refined to minimise environmental impact, with the removal of the neck label resulting in a purer, more modern silhouette to the individual wooden case, which continues to serve as the gift box.

Through the Alliance Terroirs project initiated by Tétienne, the House is striving to deepen knowledge of the soils, adopt precision viticulture, and is committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Champagne vineyard. Since January 2025, the Maison’s vineyard has been certified organic.

Emotion

Tétienne is an impressive figure driving forward Champagne Henriot’s future vision whilst sensitively recognising the House’s roots and legacy. As she says:“Maison Henriot works every day to craft cuvées that are sources of emotion. The return of the name Cuvée des Enchanteleurs gives full resonance to this philosophy”.
